The Northeastern Wisconsin (NEW) Bird Alliance, formerly the NEW Audubon Society, was initially established in 1954 as a small birding club in the Green Bay area. In 1963, the club connected with the National Audubon Society. We are now one of more than 500 local chapters in the National Audubon Society, including 14 chapters in Wisconsin. Our members live in seven counties and 55 communities throughout northeast Wisconsin.
Since its beginning, NEW Audubon has been very active locally in environmental issues, conservation, scientific investigations, habitat preservation, and environmental education.
NEW Bird Alliance applies the mission of the National Audubon Society, which is to protect birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow, throughout the Americas using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation at the local level in northeastern Wisconsin.
Throughout the year, NEW Bird Alliance offers opportunities for the public to learn about and connect with birds and to contribute to their study through citizen science. We also support other organizations and individuals in important research and conservation work. One of the strongest aspects of the NEW Bird Alliance is that it helps new start up projects gain footing and succeed by using its resources to provide 501(c)(3) non-profit status for these projects. NEW Bird Alliance is also active as a member of the Brown County Conservation Alliance and the Wisconsin Audubon Council to strengthen partnerships across the State.
Some of the recent programs and projects of NEW Bird Alliance include: coordinating two annual Christmas Bird Counts, providing public programs in partnership with the Bay Area Bird Club, hosting bird banding demonstrations at the annual Spring’s Wings event celebrating International Migratory Bird Day, providing financial support and participation in the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas II, sponsoring the Wisconsin Red-shouldered Hawk Telemetry Project: Tracking the Phantoms, and helping to coordinate the safe, live removal of Snowy Owls from airports under Project SOAR.
We are an engaging group of people wholeheartedly set on protecting and conserving birds in this region and connecting our local communities with birds and nature. We are always looking for new members and are especially interested in connecting with the younger generation of birders though we sincerely welcome any and all new members!
The Board of Directors meets monthly August-November and January-March at 5:30 pm, though all members are welcome to attend. If you are interested in joining our NEW Audubon chapter or attending our meetings, please feel free to contact us at birders@newiaudubon.org. We would love to have you!
